The Houston Rockets are finalizing a two-way contract with free-agent forward Tyler Smith and will waive guard Kevon Harris to free a roster slot, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on Tuesday.

Smith, 21, entered the league as the 33rd overall pick in the 2024 draft and spent his rookie year with the Milwaukee Bucks. Limited to 122 total minutes across 23 NBA appearances, the 6-9 forward saw most of his action in the G League, where he averaged 10.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 25.1 minutes per game for the Wisconsin Herd while shooting .415 from the field, .327 from three and .824 at the line.

Milwaukee waived Smith in October amid a roster crunch, sending him into the G League draft. The Osceola Magic selected him second overall and later traded him to the Capital City Go-Go, Washington’s affiliate. Through eight games with the Go-Go this fall, Smith has produced 10.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest on .378/.243/.846 shooting.

Houston, currently 13-5 and near the top of the Western Conference, is expected to keep Smith primarily with its G League club, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Under the terms of a two-way contract, he can be active for up to 38 NBA games for the remainder of the season.

Harris, 28, had not appeared in a game for the Rockets this year. The G League veteran logged 34 NBA outings from 2022 through 2024 while on two-way deals with the Orlando Magic.
