Rockets, Kevin Durant still without traction on new deal

Nearly two months after arriving from Phoenix, Kevin Durant has not reached a contract extension with the Houston Rockets, leaving the 36-year-old forward on course for unrestricted free agency next summer.
Durant is entering the final season of his current agreement, a $54.7 million expiring contract. He remains eligible to sign a two-year extension worth up to $120.4 million through June 30, 2026, beginning at $57.9 million in 2026-27 and rising to $62.5 million in 2027-28.
According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Houston has not indicated it will offer the full maximum, and Durant’s camp is not pressing for that figure. The report added that the Rockets do not plan to rush negotiations if no agreement is in place when the season opens.
Allowing the current deal to lapse would let Durant pursue a three-year maximum contract projected at $187.6 million, sidestepping the league’s Over-38 provision. Another route could be a one-plus-one arrangement, mirroring the extension’s salary structure while preserving flexibility.
Spotrac analyst Keith Smith floated a potential compromise: a two-year, $100 million contract with a player option for 2027, paying Durant $50 million annually and giving both sides room to reassess.
Houston acquired Durant in a blockbuster trade that sent Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks to the Phoenix Suns. For now, the organization appears comfortable beginning the 2025-26 campaign without a new pact in place.
