Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet has been diagnosed with a torn ACL, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who reported the news Tuesday on social media.

The setback comes just months after the 31-year-old re-signed with Houston on a two-year, $50 million contract. VanVleet is slated to earn $25 million in each of the next two seasons and holds a player option for 2026-27 that he is now expected to pick up while recovering.

VanVleet’s injury is anticipated to sideline him for the entire 2025-26 campaign, dealing a major blow to a team he helped transform. Before his arrival as a free agent in 2023, the Rockets posted records of 17-55, 20-62, and 22-60 in consecutive seasons. With VanVleet as the starting point guard, Houston improved to 41-41 in 2023-24 and 52-30 last year.

Further updates on VanVleet’s rehabilitation timeline and the Rockets’ roster plans are expected as more information becomes available.
