The Houston Rockets and Kevin Durant are increasingly confident a contract extension will be in place before the NBA regular season tips off on Oct. 21, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Durant, 35, is entering the final season of his current agreement, a $54.7 million deal that expires next summer. He is eligible to add two years worth up to approximately $119 million, a figure that would rise slightly in January—six months after Houston officially acquired him from the Phoenix Suns.
Team officials have approached the situation deliberately, prioritizing a potential rookie-scale extension for forward Tari Eason to better project long-term salary-cap commitments. Even so, both the organization and the 14-time All-Star appear intent on keeping Durant in Houston beyond 2025.
During the club’s media day, Durant said he expects an agreement to be reached, though he did not offer a specific timeline and suggested finances would not be a sticking point. An August report indicated the Rockets were hesitant to offer the full maximum because the new contract would cover Durant’s age-38 and age-39 seasons, yet noted the veteran might accept a two-year package near $100 million.
While negotiations continue, attention shifts back to the court. Durant told FanDuel TV’s Kay Adams he will make his Rockets preseason debut against the Utah Jazz, saying he simply wants to “get some good run up and down the floor” under game lights.
