Rival Executives Sense Growing Openness in Milwaukee to Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade

Momentum around a possible Giannis Antetokounmpo trade intensified even before the Milwaukee Bucks star strained his left calf Friday night, league sources told reporter Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
The Bucks front office had previously signaled it would approach the February 5 trade deadline looking for roster upgrades, and Antetokounmpo said two weeks ago that “requesting a trade is not in my nature.” However, a 1-5 stretch has dropped Milwaukee to 18-26, 2.5 games behind the final play-in berth, prompting fresh speculation that the team might consider moving its two-time MVP.
Antetokounmpo publicly called the Bucks “selfish” after Wednesday’s loss to Oklahoma City. ESPN’s Shams Charania later told The Pat McAfee Show that the forward’s frustration is at “an all-time high,” remarks that have circulated widely among front offices, according to Fischer.
League insiders now view Antetokounmpo’s status as the dominant storyline of the deadline, outpacing chatter surrounding Ja Morant, Anthony Davis and Michael Porter Jr. Milwaukee’s medical staff was still evaluating the 29-year-old’s calf injury at mid-day Saturday, with an initial timeline of four to six weeks. It remains unclear whether his absence will suppress bids or prompt clubs to strike quickly, banking on a post-All-Star break return.
Several executives believe the Bucks and their franchise cornerstone are heading toward a separation, with one describing the situation as “shaping up to be a draft-day kind of thing.”
The injury is expected to derail Milwaukee’s previously stated plan to hunt immediate help. Talks built around Kyle Kuzma or Bobby Portis had stalled, Fischer reported, in part because the Bucks possess limited draft capital. Other names linked to Milwaukee—Michael Porter Jr., Zach LaVine, De’Andre Hunter, Jerami Grant and Miles Bridges—have similarly shown little traction.
Opposing teams are also hesitant to assist the Bucks now, reasoning they could benefit more from a future Antetokounmpo trade. Portland, which controls Milwaukee’s 2028, 2029 and 2030 first-round picks, is cited as an example. The Trail Blazers are said to covet Mikal Bridges and could be motivated to help the New York Knicks land Antetokounmpo if it yields Bridges in return.
With the deadline less than two weeks away, clubs across the NBA are monitoring Milwaukee’s next move while waiting for clarity on Antetokounmpo’s health and the Bucks’ long-term intentions.
