The contract impasse between the Philadelphia 76ers and restricted free-agent guard Quentin Grimes shows no sign of easing with Media Day and the club’s preseason trip to Abu Dhabi approaching, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Scotto reported that Philadelphia issued its first formal offer to Grimes last week: a one-year agreement worth slightly more than his $8.7 million qualifying offer, contingent on the player waiving his no-trade clause. Grimes declined the proposal.

Representatives for the 24-year-old had initially floated annual figures in the $17-21 million range on a multi-year deal. The 76ers countered with a four-year package totaling roughly $39 million, essentially extending the qualifying offer with modest yearly raises. The two positions remain far apart.

The 76ers already have sizable commitments to Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey and intend to evaluate first-round pick VJ Edgecombe and second-year guard Jared McCain—who is coming off thumb surgery—before adding another significant backcourt contract.

Brooklyn is the lone team with the cap space necessary to tender an offer sheet, but Scotto indicated no movement has occurred on that front.

If Philadelphia does not raise its one-year proposal into the $14-19 million range, Grimes is expected to consider signing the $8.7 million qualifying offer, preserving his no-trade clause and revisiting long-term negotiations next offseason.
