The NBA community anticipates that LeBron James will return for the 2026-27 campaign despite turning 41 during the current season, according to ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill.
Goodwill told ESPN that executives and team officials believe the Los Angeles Lakers forward is not ready to retire. “If he were retiring, the league would know because it would want to celebrate him on the way out,” Goodwill said, adding that the prevailing view is that James will “play at least one more season.”
James, now in his eighth year with the Lakers, helped the franchise capture the 2020 championship. Although the organization has shifted its long-term focus to All-Star guard Luka Doncic, James remains a central figure in team history and one of the NBA’s most accomplished active players.
Whether the four-time champion finishes his career in Los Angeles is still unclear. Should he test free agency, multiple contenders are expected to express interest, especially if he opts for a reduced salary in pursuit of a fifth title.
