The New York Knicks held offseason discussions with representatives for free-agent guard Ben Simmons but did not make a formal contract offer, according to SNY’s Ian Begley.

League sources told Begley the conversations never progressed beyond preliminary interest. While Simmons remained on the team’s radar, the front office has shifted its focus to other candidates for its final roster spot, including veteran guards Landry Shamet and Malcolm Brogdon.

The situation grew more complicated when longtime agent Bernie Lee parted ways with Simmons. NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the three-time All-Star ultimately stepped back from any potential opportunity with New York, indicating he was not eager to pursue the fit.

Simmons, 29, is still unsigned with training camps approaching. He split the 2023-24 season between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 5.0 points, 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds over 51 games. Once considered a franchise cornerstone, the former No. 1 overall pick has dealt with back issues, declining production and the uncertainty of free agency without an agent.

New York’s minimum-salary slot remains open as the team continues to evaluate options, while Simmons weighs his next move.
