General manager Bobby Webster has officially taken full control of the Toronto Raptors’ basketball operations, a move widely expected throughout the league, according to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer. Speaking during a Wednesday livestream, Fischer said most executives assumed Webster would ascend to the top position after the club parted ways with former president Masai Ujiri. The only surprise, he added, was that Toronto publicly announced an external search before finalizing Webster’s promotion.
Fischer noted that even an industry consultant tied to executive search firms was “taken aback” by the public search, believing Webster’s appointment was already a foregone conclusion.
Ownership pushes to end rebuild
After trading Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby during the 2023/24 campaign and missing the postseason for three consecutive years, the Raptors have been instructed by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment to move past their rebuilding phase, Fischer said. The organization reportedly expects the team to compete for a top-six playoff seed this season rather than settle for a play-in berth.
Draft-night discussions with Boston
Toronto explored moving the No. 9 overall pick before June’s draft, holding talks with the Boston Celtics about acquiring veterans Jrue Holiday or Derrick White to bolster the backcourt, Fischer confirmed. The Raptors ultimately kept the pick and selected forward Collin Murray-Boyles.
Buyer’s stance for 2025/26
Although trade-deadline activity remains months away, Fischer already views Toronto as a likely buyer for the 2025/26 season—provided the roster stays healthy and the club remains in playoff position.
RJ Barrett emerges as trade chip
Veteran forward RJ Barrett is considered the team’s primary trade candidate. Fischer said Barrett’s name surfaced during February talks with the New Orleans Pelicans involving Brandon Ingram, though the Pelicans showed little interest. Barrett’s representatives are reportedly aware he could be included in future deals as Toronto pursues immediate upgrades.
