Toronto has made preliminary inquiries about acquiring Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis, according to Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca. While the Raptors have sounded out the Lakers, Lewenberg is doubtful a deal ultimately materializes and noted skepticism that any framework with the Dallas Mavericks would be completed.
In a potential two-team structure, Lewenberg reported that Toronto’s outgoing salary would likely center on RJ Barrett and Jakob Poeltl, with Dallas expected to insist on several first-round picks in addition. The Raptors have previously taken chances on injured stars, but parting with two or three first-rounders for Davis would not constitute a “buy-low” scenario, Lewenberg added.
Focus on tax line
More immediately, the organization is prioritizing getting below the luxury-tax threshold before the Feb. 5 trade deadline. Wing Ochai Agbaji is viewed as a possible salary-dump candidate, though moving his contract would likely require an added incentive.
Other names on the radar
Lewenberg identified centers Daniel Gafford and Goga Bitadze as players Toronto is monitoring. He also reported that the club is encouraged by rookie forward Collin Murray-Boyles and does not want to hinder his progress with a crowded frontcourt.
Overall, Lewenberg believes a major transaction is more likely to occur during the offseason than ahead of next month’s deadline.
