Raptors grapple with Poeltl’s back injury, explore options to shore up frontcourt and shooting

The Toronto Raptors continue to juggle lineups while center Jakob Poeltl deals with a lingering back strain that has forced the club into frequent small-ball looks.

Rebounding issues without Poeltl

With the 7-footer sidelined, Toronto was outrebounded 55-37 in a loss to Boston last week. On Sunday, Poeltl logged only seven minutes and the Nets held a 48-39 edge on the glass in a Brooklyn win.

Coach outlines cautious plan

Head coach Darko Rajaković said the team is managing the injury daily. “He can look great during a game, then wake up feeling different,” the coach explained. The organization’s strategy includes strengthening work and allowing Poeltl to play through limited discomfort when possible. Rajaković added that a two-week shutdown in the offseason would likely resolve the issue, but in-season scheduling complicates that approach.

Latest injury report

Poeltl and forward RJ Barrett were both ruled out for Tuesday’s matchup in Miami. The Raptors listed Poeltl with a lower-back strain, while Barrett remains sidelined by the knee problem that has kept him out since Nov. 23.

Frontcourt depth on radar

Columnist Michael Grange of Sportsnet argues Toronto should prioritize acquiring another center instead of banking on Poeltl’s recovery. While an ambitious trade for Anthony Davis of the Mavericks appears unlikely—Dallas reportedly prefers to stay competitive when healthy—Grange believes a dependable backup would ease the workload.

One low-cost possibility is free-agent big man Mo Bamba, currently playing in the G League. Grange suggests a 10-day contract next month could offer short-term help.

Need for outside shooting

The Raptors also lack consistent perimeter scoring, according to Eric Koreen of The Athletic. Potential trade targets mentioned include wings Quentin Grimes, Keon Ellis and Collin Sexton.

Poeltl, who signed a three-year extension during the offseason, has battled back discomfort since the campaign’s opening weeks. Until he returns to full strength, Toronto’s ability to rebound and space the floor remains a pressing concern.
