Raptors weigh star pursuits while monitoring injuries and tax line

The Toronto Raptors, one of seven NBA clubs that possess every future first-round pick, are theoretically positioned to chase a marquee talent such as Giannis Antetokounmpo or Anthony Davis, according to Eric Koreen of The Athletic. Still, Koreen contends that acquiring either player would leave Toronto short of championship caliber.

Antetokounmpo scenario

Koreen writes that any Milwaukee Bucks discussion would likely open with Scottie Barnes and multiple first-round selections. While Barnes may never match Antetokounmpo’s perennial MVP production, the 24-year-old forward is nearly seven years younger, earns less, and carries a lighter injury history. There is also no indication Milwaukee or Antetokounmpo would green-light such a move.

If Barnes were kept out of talks, Koreen suggests a package built around RJ Barrett, Jakob Poeltl, Collin Murray-Boyles and draft picks. That offer would leave Toronto without a true center—already the club’s thinnest position—along with diminished depth and limited avenues for future upgrades.

Davis considerations

Koreen notes that Davis’ age, injury record and lower overall impact make the Mavericks big man less costly in principle. Even so, Toronto would need to send out two starters to match salary, eroding depth. Davis also prefers to avoid full-time center duties and, like Poeltl, brings contract and durability concerns.

Cap maneuvering ahead of deadline

Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca echoes Koreen’s analysis and adds that Toronto sits less than $1 million over the luxury-tax line. The front office is expected to move below the threshold before the February 5 trade deadline and is exploring deals.

Backup-center market

Grange reports the Raptors are assessing packages featuring Ochai Agbaji and additional salaries to land a reserve center who can step in when Poeltl is sidelined. Past interest has been shown in Wizards big man Daniel Gafford, while Magic center Goga Bitadze is viewed as an attractive target. Grange lists five other potential options at the position.

Injury updates

• Barrett, out since November 24 with a right knee sprain, will resume basketball activities later this week after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection, the team announced Monday. The Toronto native ranks third on the roster in scoring.
• Second-year wing Jamison Battle, sidelined by a left ankle sprain on December 5, was active for Monday’s game in Miami. The 23-year-old averages 8.1 minutes over 17 appearances and is shooting 80% on two-pointers (12-for-15) and 59.1% from deep (13-for-22).
