Raptors weigh luxury-tax avoidance while shopping for frontcourt depth before deadline

The Toronto Raptors are entering the final stretch before the NBA trade deadline with two clear objectives: stay below the luxury-tax threshold and shore up their frontcourt rotation, according to Sportsnet’s Michael Grange.

Grange reported that Toronto has made wing Ochai Agbaji—who is on a $6.4 million expiring deal—its most available trade piece. The organization is said to view Agbaji’s contract as a means to add flexibility without absorbing long-term salary commitments.

On the list of potential additions, Goga Bitadze of the Orlando Magic remains a name worth tracking. The Raptors previously showed interest in the 6-foot-11 center earlier this season and are still surveying the market for cost-effective size.

Another option is Day’Ron Sharpe of the Brooklyn Nets, whom the front office is evaluating as it searches for depth that will not push the team into the tax. League sources also believe second-year New Orleans Pelicans center Yves Missi is available, though Toronto’s level of engagement on Missi is unclear.

With the deadline approaching, the Raptors’ discussions around the league continue to revolve around these twin goals of financial prudence and interior reinforcement.
