Podcast speculation floats Stephen Curry–for–LaMelo Ball swap between Warriors and Hornets

The Golden State Warriors have landed in the middle of the Western Conference pack, and that uncertainty has sparked a headline-grabbing hypothetical: trading franchise icon Stephen Curry to the Charlotte Hornets.

During a recent episode of “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” Ringer founder Bill Simmons, joined by ESPN analyst Tim Legler, suggested sending Curry to his hometown team in exchange for LaMelo Ball and multiple draft picks. Simmons framed the idea as a thought experiment rather than a concrete plan, but the proposal quickly spread across NBA circles.

Golden State is 15-15 and sits eighth in the West after consecutive victories, including a decisive win over Orlando. With an aging roster and limited roster flexibility, head coach Steve Kerr has faced questions about integrating younger players such as Jonathan Kuminga. Simmons argued that the franchise looks “caught between eras” and may lack a clear path back to title contention.

Curry, 37, is under contract through the 2026-27 season and is owed roughly $62 million in its final year. While he remains the face of the Warriors, the Western Conference is trending younger, led by rising teams such as Oklahoma City and San Antonio.

Charlotte, which has not reached the postseason since 2016, would gain instant star power and box-office appeal with a Curry homecoming. Meanwhile, Ball’s long-term trajectory with the Hornets is still uncertain, and a package of future draft assets could accelerate a Warriors rebuild if such a trade were ever considered.

For now, the scenario remains purely theoretical, but its mere appearance illustrates how the league views Golden State at a potential crossroads.
