DETROIT — The Pistons have waived forward Isaac Jones, opening a roster spot required to finalize their recently completed three-team trade with the Bulls and Timberwolves.
Detroit’s move, first reported by Keith Smith of Spotrac, comes less than three months after the club claimed the 25-year-old off waivers from Sacramento. Jones, an undrafted product of Washington State, appeared in only one game for the Pistons, logging two minutes in a late-game situation.
Most of his season has been spent with the Motor City Cruise, Detroit’s NBA G League affiliate. In 26 G League contests, the 6-7 forward averaged 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 blocks across 28.1 minutes, while shooting 55.7 percent from the field.
Jones’ $1,955,377 salary became guaranteed after the league-wide deadline on Jan. 7. Unless another team claims him during the current waiver period, Detroit will remain responsible for that full cap hit.
The trade completed Tuesday sent guard Jaden Ivey to Chicago, with Kevin Huerter and Dario Šarić arriving in Detroit. Because the Pistons already carried the maximum 15 standard contracts, a release was necessary to process the one-for-two transaction.
Šarić could be the next roster casualty; waiving the veteran forward would create space to convert two-way guard Daniss Jenkins, who is one appearance away from reaching his 50-game limit with the NBA club.
