Despite recent speculation, the Detroit Pistons are not actively trying to acquire Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis, according to league sources cited by Hunter Patterson of The Athletic.
Last week, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Detroit could be among the teams interested in the 32-year-old forward/center. However, sources told Patterson that the organization’s front office is prioritizing internal development over a major in-season splash.
President of basketball operations Trajan Langdon has repeatedly emphasized a patient approach. Speaking publicly in recent weeks, Langdon said Detroit would remain “opportunistic” if the right deal emerged but did not intend to pursue significant roster changes aggressively.
The Pistons improved to 21-5 after Monday’s road win in Boston, the best record in the Eastern Conference, reinforcing management’s confidence in the current group. Team officials believe any substantial move would be better timed for the offseason, when Jalen Duren and Jaden Ivey will enter restricted free agency and Ausar Thompson and Isaiah Stewart become extension-eligible.
Financial considerations also factor into Detroit’s stance. Trading for a max-salary player such as Davis would tighten future cap flexibility and carry added risk because of his injury history.
Additional reporting from Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press indicated no trade discussions have taken place between Detroit and Dallas. Keith Langlois of Pistons.com likewise questioned the likelihood of an in-season deal for the 10-time All-Star.
With the February 5 trade deadline still weeks away, sources told Patterson that the Pistons are more likely to consider minor tweaks than pursue a blockbuster.
