The New Orleans Pelicans enter the offseason with a pivotal decision: will interim coach James Borrego return as the permanent head coach?
ESPN front-office analyst Bobby Marks identified Borrego’s status as the franchise’s top question heading into the summer. Borrego assumed the role after a sluggish opening stretch and has spent several months making his case to stay.
Since the All-Star break, New Orleans has ranked in the upper half of the NBA in both offensive rating and net rating. One lineup—Dejounte Murray, Trey Murphy III, Herbert Jones, Saddiq Bey, and Zion Williamson—has been particularly productive, consistently outscoring opponents.
Executive vice president Joe Dumars called for consistent effort when he made the coaching change earlier in the season. By most measures, Borrego has delivered on that mandate.
The Pelicans will not have a lottery pick in this year’s draft, and much of the core roster is already under contract, making continuity an important consideration. Whether that continuity includes Borrego remains the organization’s primary offseason decision.
