The New Orleans Pelicans have struck a deal with 27-year-old forward Jalen McDaniels, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The agreement was reported Monday, August 18.
McDaniels spent most of last season with the Capital City Go-Go, Washington’s NBA G League affiliate, where he averaged 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds across 38 games. He appeared in four NBA contests for the Washington Wizards in February after signing a 10-day contract.
The 6-foot-9 wing entered the league as the 52nd pick in the 2019 draft and played his first three-and-a-half seasons with the Charlotte Hornets. At the 2023 trade deadline, Charlotte sent him to the Philadelphia 76ers in a four-team swap, and he later joined the Toronto Raptors as a free agent that summer. Last year he was traded to the Sacramento Kings in June, moved to the San Antonio Spurs in October, and waived a day later before returning to the G League.
Over 252 career NBA games, McDaniels has averaged 6.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists while logging 18.1 minutes per night.
Contract terms were not disclosed. With 14 standard contracts already on the books, New Orleans has one open roster spot and sits about $4.2 million below the luxury-tax threshold. Because McDaniels has played six NBA seasons, he is ineligible for a two-way deal and could be joining the Pelicans on an Exhibit 10 contract that includes a training-camp invitation.
