The New Orleans Pelicans reshaped the back end of their offseason roster this week, signing undrafted rookies Johnny O’Neil and Jalon Moore to Exhibit 10 contracts and waiving both players shortly after the deals became official.
O’Neil, a 6-foot-10 forward/center, spent three seasons at American University before transferring to Santa Clara. In his lone year with the Broncos, he averaged 7.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.0 block while shooting nearly 40 percent from three-point range. By signing and waiving him, New Orleans can direct O’Neil to its G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron, where he would be eligible for a bonus of up to $85,300 if he remains with the club for at least 60 days.
The club employed the same maneuver with Moore, a 6-foot-7 forward who posted 15.9 points and 5.8 rebounds as a senior at Oklahoma. Moore tore his Achilles during a pre-draft workout with San Antonio and is expected to miss the entire 2024-25 campaign, but the transaction allows the Pelicans to retain his G League rights should they want him in the system for 2026-27.
Following the two moves, New Orleans sits at the offseason maximum of 21 players: 14 on fully guaranteed contracts, four on Exhibit 10 deals and three on two-way agreements.
