New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado and Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams were tossed from Saturday’s game in New Orleans after trading punches late in the third quarter.

The confrontation began when Alvarado shoved Williams with both hands as the 7’1″ center tried to set a screen. While Alvarado turned to the referee to argue the foul call, Williams responded with a similar two-handed push. The 6’0″ guard then confronted Williams, who attempted to brush him aside with a forearm. Alvarado grabbed Williams’ left arm and jersey, and the brief fight escalated as each player landed a right-handed punch. Williams also swung downward with his left hand while teammates and officials intervened.

Game officials immediately ejected both players. No injuries were reported.

Phoenix went on to win the contest. Afterward, Suns head coach Jordan Ott told reporters he had not reviewed footage of the incident. “I saw it start, and then all of a sudden everyone jumped in,” Ott said, noting the game was the second night of a back-to-back for his team. “They got tangled up, and obviously they both got thrown out.”

The NBA routinely hands down fines and suspensions when punches are thrown, leaving open the possibility of additional discipline for Alvarado and Williams.
