Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George will be sidelined when the team opens training camp, continuing his recovery from offseason surgery on his left knee.

The 35-year-old veteran said during Monday’s media day that the procedure followed an injury suffered during summer workouts. “I’m getting better and better,” George told reporters. “I’m feeling stronger and stronger. I feel a lot better now than I did at this point last year.” No timeline was provided for his return, but he confirmed he will not be ready for the first day of camp.

George joined the 76ers last summer on a four-year, $211 million contract that pays him $51.7 million this season and could reach $56.6 million in 2027-28 if he exercises a player option.

His first season in Philadelphia was hampered by injuries. George appeared in 41 games, averaging 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists. The 76ers finished 24-58, missed the playoffs, and had George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey on the floor together for only 15 games.

Philadelphia’s offseason featured incremental moves rather than major changes. The club drafted VJ Edgecombe with the No. 3 pick and Johni Broome at No. 35, re-signed Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon, added Trendon Watford, and lost Guerschon Yabusele to the New York Knicks. Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre Jr. exercised options to remain with the team.

Quentin Grimes remains a restricted free agent and did not attend media day. Unless he reaches a new agreement, the guard has until Oct. 1 to sign his $8.7 million qualifying offer.

George has previously played for the Pacers, Thunder and Clippers but has yet to reach the NBA Finals. Philadelphia hopes his eventual return will boost a roster built to contend once he is fully healthy.
