DALLAS — In a rare one-on-one interview, Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont said the organization will launch an immediate search for a new president of basketball operations after finishing its worst season since 2017/18.

“Monday morning, we’re going to get active,” Dumont told the Dallas Morning News. “Our goal is to have someone on board by the middle of May.”

Front-office priorities

Dumont, who has overseen the club for 27 months, said candidates must demonstrate a history of building strong cultures, working with young players and developing talent. Reports have linked Boston’s Brad Stevens and Oklahoma City’s Sam Presti to the opening, but both run successful franchises and are considered long shots.

Lingering impact of the Luka Dončić trade

The governor acknowledged that every decision will be judged against last season’s controversial deal that sent Luka Dončić elsewhere. “I believe in our accountability,” he said. “We have to work hard to make things right.”

Dallas did secure rookie standout Cooper Flagg in last year’s draft lottery, offering what Dumont called a “pool of great young talent” around which to rebuild.

Relationship with former majority owner Mark Cuban

Dumont addressed recent comments from Mark Cuban, who expressed regret over selling his controlling stake and was rumored to be part of a group trying to repurchase the team.

“Mark is really passionate about the Mavericks, and I think that’s great,” Dumont said. “But we’ve been clear: we’re not moving the team, and the franchise is not for sale.”

New arena discussions

The club continues to evaluate potential sites for a new arena, including the current Dallas City Hall location. Dumont envisions the venue as a year-round sports and entertainment hub. He declined to specify funding details but confirmed that private investment would be part of the project.

“It creates a better experience for our fans,” he said, adding that the complex could host events before and after games and contribute to the community.
