Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero is scheduled for an MRI after straining his left groin during Wednesday night’s 17-point victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
The injury occurred in the second quarter when the 2022 No. 1 overall pick accelerated upcourt following a defensive rebound. Banchero said he immediately felt discomfort, stayed on the floor for a few possessions, then asked to be removed to prevent further damage.
Speaking with The Athletic’s Fred Katz, the 22-year-old noted that he can still move without significant pain, leading team trainers to suggest the strain might not be a tear. He compared the situation to last season’s oblique injury that sidelined him for more than two months, saying the current pain level is noticeably lower.
Banchero has started all 12 games for Orlando, averaging 23.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 34.7 minutes.
Jonathan Isaac opened the second half in Banchero’s place against New York and is expected to take on a larger role if the MRI shows Banchero needs time off. Forward Tristan Da Silva could also see an increase in minutes.
The road win evened Orlando’s record at 6-6 after the club began the season 1-4.
