The Indiana Pacers plan to sign free-agent wing Garrison Mathews to a 10-day contract using the NBA’s hardship exception, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Mathews, 29, has built a reputation as a perimeter threat since entering the league in 2019. The 6-foot-7 guard/forward has appeared in 314 regular-season games with Washington, Houston and Atlanta, averaging 6.5 points in 17.5 minutes while converting 38.2 percent of his three-point attempts.
After spending the past two and a half seasons with the Hawks, Mathews accepted a non-guaranteed training-camp deal with the Knicks this fall but was waived at the end of the preseason when Landry Shamet secured the final roster spot. He has remained unsigned until now.
Indiana’s hardship slot became available as Jeremiah Robinson-Earl completed his second 10-day contract. The Pacers are converting Robinson-Earl to a two-year standard deal and will waive Monte Morris to open a spot on the 15-man roster.
The team continues to meet hardship criteria because Tyrese Haliburton (Achilles), Obi Toppin (foot), Aaron Nesmith (knee) and Kam Jones (back) have each missed at least three consecutive games and are projected to be out for a minimum of two more weeks.
Mathews will earn $165,197 during his 10-day stay, while the Pacers incur a $131,970 cap hit.
