The Indiana Pacers are set to bring in veteran wing Cody Martin on a 10-day contract via the NBA’s hardship exception, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Martin, 30, spent most of his career with the Charlotte Hornets before being dealt to the Phoenix Suns in February alongside Vasilije Micić as part of the Jusuf Nurkic trade. Phoenix waived the 6-foot-6 forward on June 30.
At his peak in the 2021-22 season, Martin averaged 7.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 48.0 percent from the field and 38.0 percent from three for Charlotte. Injuries limited him to just 35 games over the following two years, though he appeared in 53 contests last season for the Hornets and Suns, posting 41.8 percent overall shooting and 28.5 percent accuracy from beyond the arc.
Indiana’s roster is at capacity, so the move hinges on the hardship exception. The Pacers already have forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl under a hardship deal; earning a second exception would allow them to keep Robinson-Earl and add Martin.
NBA rules permit a hardship exception when four players have missed at least three consecutive games and are expected to remain out for two more weeks. If five players meet that standard, the league can grant a second hardship slot.
