The Indiana Pacers have reached agreement with veteran point guard Monte Morris on a one-year, non-guaranteed deal, giving the 30-year-old an opportunity to compete for a roster spot in training camp, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania and HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
Indiana currently has 13 players on fully guaranteed contracts, leaving room for Morris if he can secure one of the final spots. Because the Pacers’ camp roster is already at the league maximum, at least one transaction will be required before Morris can be added officially.
The move aims to bolster a backcourt that will be without All-Star Tyrese Haliburton for the season as he recovers from an Achilles tear. Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell are expected to handle most of the minutes at point guard, while Morris would provide another experienced option off the bench.
Morris appeared in 45 games for the Phoenix Suns last season, all as a reserve, and averaged 5.2 points and 1.6 assists in just under 13 minutes per contest. Over seven NBA seasons with Denver, Washington, Detroit, Minnesota and Phoenix, he has played in 420 games and posted career averages of 9.5 points and 3.6 assists while shooting almost 39 percent from three-point range.
