INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers reconfigured head coach Rick Carlisle’s bench on Monday, naming Johnny Carpenter an assistant coach and moving veteran Jim Boylen to the front row alongside Lloyd Pierce and Jenny Boucek.
Carpenter arrives after spending last season in player development and scouting with the Memphis Grizzlies. Before that, he logged nine years at the University of Virginia in roles ranging from assistant coach to director of player personnel. He also worked under Carlisle with the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant video coordinator during the 2014–15 campaign.
His addition reunites him with center Jay Huff. Carpenter coached Huff at Virginia and later helped facilitate the player’s stint in Memphis. The two are back together after Indiana acquired Huff in a July trade.
Boylen’s promotion fills the vacancy created when assistant Mike Weinar and the club mutually agreed to part ways. The former Chicago Bulls head coach now joins Pierce and Boucek as Carlisle’s primary assistants for the upcoming season.
