The Indiana Pacers formally signed guard Mac McClung to a multiyear contract and waived center James Wiseman, the team announced Tuesday.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, McClung’s agreement is non-guaranteed. HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported that Indiana created the roster opening by cutting Wiseman. Cap expert Keith Smith of Spotrac added that the Pacers will still carry $1 million of Wiseman’s salary on this season’s cap because of a partial guarantee.

Wiseman’s brief stint in Indiana

Wiseman, 24, joined the Pacers last offseason after stops with Golden State and Detroit and was projected to back up starting center Myles Turner. He ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the season opener and re-signed on a two-year deal in July. The 7-footer appeared in only one game this fall, recording four points and four rebounds in 20 minutes during a loss in Memphis.

Backcourt reinforcement

The move addresses Indiana’s shortage of healthy guards while leaning on the club’s frontcourt depth. McClung, 26, gained widespread attention by winning three consecutive NBA Slam Dunk Contests and has evolved into one of the G League’s top scorers.

Last season with the Osceola Magic, the 6-foot-2 guard earned All-NBA G League First Team honors after averaging 23.0 points, 5.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds on 48 percent shooting. Despite appearing in only six NBA games across four teams, the Pacers deal represents his first standard NBA contract.

McClung recently signed with the Chicago Bulls, was waived, and was expected to open the season in the G League before Indiana’s call. He now brings his energy and leaping flair to a Pacers roster seeking immediate backcourt help.
