Indiana’s front office will soon decide whether to guarantee Micah Potter’s contract, and the recently signed center is giving them reasons to keep him. The 27-year-old joined the Pacers on December 26 and has delivered two productive performances as the deadline approaches next week.
Potter lifts lineups despite back-to-back losses
In Wednesday’s two-point defeat at Orlando, Potter logged eight points, three rebounds and three assists, but posted a game-high plus-23 in 26 minutes. He earned the starting job Friday against San Antonio, producing 16 points and six boards in 28 minutes. Indiana fell by 10, yet was plus-four while he was on the floor.
“Micah just knows the game. Plays hard, physical. Kinda just fits in,” guard Andrew Nembhard said.
Mathurin’s foul trouble stalls offense
Second-year wing Bennedict Mathurin struggled versus the Spurs, collecting five fouls in just under 20 minutes. He finished with two points on 1-of-6 shooting, five rebounds and three assists. Head coach Rick Carlisle called the starting role “the opportunity of a lifetime” for Mathurin, who ranks second on the team in minutes. The 2023 lottery pick will become a restricted free agent this summer if Indiana extends a qualifying offer.
Kam Jones impresses in delayed debut
Rookie guard Kam Jones, sidelined the first two months with a back injury, made his NBA debut Friday and was plus-16 in 10 reserve minutes. “When he goes in games, good things happen,” Carlisle said. “I see good things. I like his spirit. I like his energy.”
Nesmith deals with new hand concern
Forward Aaron Nesmith, recently back from a left knee sprain, appeared to hurt his left hand against San Antonio. Trainers taped two fingers, and he showed visible discomfort for the remainder of the game.
The Pacers return to action early next week as they weigh roster moves ahead of the guarantee deadline.
