The Indiana Pacers are evaluating trade options at center and have identified Dallas Mavericks big man Daniel Gafford as a prime target, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
Indiana has been looking to reinforce the middle since losing longtime starter Myles Turner to the Milwaukee Bucks in free agency. Gafford, 27, is viewed inside the organization as a natural pick-and-roll partner for Tyrese Haliburton, who is expected back from an Achilles injury next season.
Through the current campaign, Gafford is averaging 8.9 points and 6.4 rebounds while converting 61 percent of his shots from the field. The former second-round pick signed an extension with Dallas over the summer and is earning $14.4 million this season, but league sources told DallasHoopsJournal he is considered the club’s most movable veteran as the Mavericks weigh roster changes following the departure of general manager Nico Harrison.
The Pacers enter play at 6-18 one year removed from their unexpected run to the NBA Finals and remain motivated to stabilize a front court that currently lacks a true rim-protecting presence. Dallas sits at 9-16 and is expected to be active once the league’s 82 offseason signings become eligible to be traded on December 15.
