The Indiana Pacers announced Monday, August 25, that Johnny Carpenter has joined Rick Carlisle’s coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Carpenter spent the 2024-25 NBA season with the Memphis Grizzlies in a player development and scouting capacity. Before his NBA stint, he worked nine seasons at the University of Virginia, holding positions that included assistant coach, director of player personnel, and basketball technology assistant.
The 34-year-old maintains a longstanding connection with Carlisle; he served as an assistant video coordinator for the Dallas Mavericks during the 2014-15 campaign when Carlisle was the Mavericks’ head coach.
Carpenter’s arrival in Indianapolis also reunites him with center Jay Huff. The two worked together at Virginia, and Carpenter reportedly championed Memphis’ decision to acquire Huff last season. Huff was dealt to the Pacers in July.
The Pacers’ press release also confirmed that veteran assistant Jim Boylen has been promoted to the front of the bench. Boylen joins Lloyd Pierce and Jenny Boucek as Carlisle’s lead assistants, filling the vacancy created when Mike Weinar and the franchise mutually agreed to part ways earlier this offseason.
