After stumbling through the 2025-26 campaign, the Indiana Pacers are pinning their hopes on the upcoming draft lottery and a clean bill of health to jump back into the Eastern Conference race next season.
Indiana enters the summer over the salary cap and brushing up against the luxury-tax threshold, giving the front office little room to maneuver beyond the taxpayer mid-level exception. That financial reality makes the May lottery drawing a pivotal moment.
The Pacers’ 2026 first-round pick is protected for selections 1-4. If the pick lands fifth or lower, it transfers to the Los Angeles Clippers. Securing a top-four slot would hand Indiana a premium prospect and potentially speed up its return to contention.
Most of the core is already locked in. Tyrese Haliburton, Pascal Siakam, and Ivica Zubac are all under contract, leaving few immediate roster decisions. Instead, team executives are expected to stay alert for trade opportunities that could balance salaries or adjust the roster’s construction.
Contract extensions for several players are eligible later this offseason, but none are considered time-sensitive. With stability at the top of the depth chart and a bit of lottery luck, Indiana believes a rebound is within reach in 2026-27.
