Pacers Anticipate Four-Week Absence for Aaron Nesmith After Left Knee Sprain

Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said Saturday that forward Aaron Nesmith is expected to be out approximately four weeks with a sprained left knee.

Carlisle told reporters before Saturday’s game that imaging revealed no ligament damage. “It’s likely going to be at least four weeks, so talk to me on the 15th of December,” he said. “But it’s very good news. He’s not in a brace. He’s walking.” Carlisle added that the recovery could be shorter but emphasized the team’s relief over the initial diagnosis.

Nesmith was hurt Thursday when his right foot landed on teammate Jeremiah Robinson-Earl’s foot, causing his right leg to slide and his left knee to buckle. The 25-year-old rolled off the floor and needed assistance to reach the locker room.

The fourth-year wing was a key contributor during Indiana’s run to last season’s NBA Finals and has taken on a larger scoring role amid the club’s injury-filled 1-11 start. Through 11 games he is averaging a career-best 15.5 points per game, though his shooting has dipped to 36.7 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Carlisle also offered a positive update on guard Bennedict Mathurin, who has missed nine contests with a right great toe sprain. Mathurin, who opened the season with 36- and 26-point performances, participated in a simulated game workout Saturday morning and “is moving in a good direction,” according to the coach.
