Center Jusuf Nurkic, acquired from Charlotte during the summer in a deal that sent Collin Sexton and a second-round pick the other way, has become a key part of the Utah Jazz rotation after Walker Kessler suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Nurkic has started 24 games to date, logging 25.4 minutes per contest.
“He helps us create an advantage in a way that no one else does,” head coach Will Hardy said, praising Nurkic’s screening, rebounding and physical presence. The 30-year-old big man has also lauded Utah’s environment, telling reporters he feels “wanted” and noting that he and veteran forward Kevin Love frequently remind younger teammates how supportive the organization is.
Love’s unexpected minutes
Considered a throw-in when Norman Powell went to Miami and John Collins landed with the Clippers in a three-team trade, Love weighed a buyout before the season but has instead carved out a regular role. After averaging 10.9 minutes with the Heat last year, the 36-year-old is posting 9.9 points and 5.8 rebounds in 20.1 minutes this month while shooting .413 from the field, .370 from three and .769 at the line.
“He’s an elite rebounder, and his savvy in his 18th season gives us a different look,” Hardy said, adding that Love’s floor spacing has helped Utah’s offense.
Identifying a long-term fifth starter
The Jazz view Lauri Markkanen, Keyonte George, draft pick Ace Bailey and the injured Kessler as their “core four.” Team observers believe a defensive-minded wing would best complement that group, with players in the mold of Luguentz Dort, Herbert Jones, Tari Eason or Matisse Thybulle cited as examples—whether acquired at this season’s trade deadline or later.
