MIAMI — Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic left Monday night’s matchup with the Miami Heat after suffering a left knee injury and did not return.
The three-time MVP went down with 3:41 remaining in the second quarter when Heat forward Spencer Jones, who had lost his balance, backpedaled onto Jokic’s left foot. The contact caused Jokic’s leg to buckle, and he immediately grabbed his knee while lying on the court.
After several moments on the floor, Jokic received assistance from teammates and training staff to stand. He walked to the locker room under his own power but was visibly limping. Denver ruled him out for the remainder of the game just before halftime.
Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that Jokic is expected to undergo further testing on Tuesday.
The injury comes as Denver continues to navigate multiple absences. Forward Aaron Gordon remains sidelined with a hamstring strain, guard Christian Braun is out with an ankle injury, and forward Cameron Johnson is expected to miss at least a month with a knee bone bruise.
Jokic entered the night averaging 29.9 points, 12.4 rebounds and 11.1 assists while shooting over 60 percent from the field. He leads the NBA in triple-doubles and is again a leading candidate in the MVP race.
