All 30 NBA governors agreed this week to study adding franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas, yet a handful of team owners remain uneasy about the plan, according to Howard Beck of The Ringer.

Beck reported that two or three governors harbor “real concerns” about the economics of welcoming two additional clubs. Several front-office executives share that hesitation, describing the initiative as primarily revenue-driven while questioning its on-court value.

“Is (expansion) good? I would say no,” an executive from a current playoff team told Beck. “I look at some of these rosters and can say some teams have at least one, if not two, players that shouldn’t be in the NBA. There should be a concern about dilution of talent.”

The executive added that any new Seattle or Las Vegas roster “is going to be really bad for a while,” especially with top college players now able to earn lucrative NIL money and stay in school longer.

The league’s exploratory vote gives owners an exit ramp if the numbers do not meet expectations. Enthusiasm is projected to remain high if combined expansion fees land in the $8–10 billion range; interest could cool quickly if bids hover around $5 billion.

Although Seattle and Las Vegas are the leading candidates, Beck noted that the NBA might pivot to another city should a stronger financial package emerge. One executive contended, however, that both markets would compare favorably to several existing franchises.
