CHICAGO — Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic said Sunday he is ending his international career with Montenegro after the national team was eliminated from EuroBasket in Riga.
The 34-year-old veteran made the announcement following Montenegro’s loss to Great Britain, a defeat that prevented the squad from advancing in the tournament. “Finishing my time with the national team like this is hard,” Vucevic told reporters. “I would have loved to keep playing in Riga, but it’s time for the next generation to make its mark.”
Vucevic debuted with the senior team at EuroBasket 2011 and went on to appear in multiple major competitions over the past 14 years. He noted the pride that comes with representing a nation of roughly 600,000 people, saying every trip to a major event felt like “a huge success” for Montenegro.
“Some tournaments went well, others didn’t—that’s sports,” he said. “What matters is the friendships and memories we built along the way.”
The two-time NBA All-Star will turn 35 in October and is entering the final season of a three-year, $60 million contract with Chicago.
