The Los Angeles Lakers have added guard Nick Smith Jr. on a two-way contract and released center Kylor Kelley, the team announced in a press release, according to reporter Khobi Price.
Smith, 21, became available after the Charlotte Hornets waived him last week amid a roster squeeze that included an excess of guards. Selected 27th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, the Arkansas product appeared in 60 games as a rookie—starting 27—and averaged 9.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists.
Although he opened his NBA career on a standard contract, league rules allow third-year players to sign two-way deals, clearing the path for his move to Los Angeles. Smith fills the Lakers’ final two-way slot alongside Christian Koloko and Chris Manon.
Kelley, 27, had joined the Lakers on an Exhibit 10 agreement late last month. The 7-footer split last season between the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks, logging 11 appearances (two starts) and averaging 3.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in 11.5 minutes per game.
He also spent time in the Lakers’ system a year ago, earning a spot in training camp before being waived and sent to the G League. With the South Bay Lakers, Kelley started 27 of 32 contests, producing 11.5 points on 68.2 percent shooting, 7.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.4 blocks across 26.7 minutes.
If he clears waivers and returns to South Bay, Kelley can secure a bonus of up to $85,300 by remaining with the affiliate for at least 60 days.
