Mixed Signals Surround Nets’ Willingness to Trade Michael Porter Jr. Before Feb. 5 Deadline

Conflicting reports are circulating about the Brooklyn Nets’ plans for Michael Porter Jr. ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline.

Over the weekend, The Athletic’s John Hollinger, citing a trusted league source, described the 26-year-old forward as “a lock” to be dealt before the cutoff. Other reporters, however, paint a less certain picture.

In his latest Substack column, veteran journalist Marc Stein wrote that some executives expect Brooklyn to “sell high” after Porter’s breakout campaign, yet he continues to hear pushback suggesting the Nets may wait until the offseason to consider major moves.

Appearing on YES Network with Justin Shackil, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto echoed that skepticism. “Right now, a lot of contending teams have called just to gauge the situation,” Scotto said, adding that Brooklyn intends to “take a step forward” next season and views Porter, still in his prime, as a potential cornerstone. “I would temper expectations on a trade, at least at this point,” he added.

Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported that the Warriors and Bucks reached out to Brooklyn in early January. According to Siegel, the Nets have not indicated a desire to move the sharpshooter and have set an opening price of at least one valuable first-round pick. Even if that threshold is met, it does not guarantee a deal.

Scotto also noted that center Nic Claxton is drawing interest because of his descending contract. He identified the Pacers and Warriors among the teams that have checked in but said Brooklyn still views the 26-year-old big man as part of its long-term plans. Siegel’s reporting aligns with that stance, stating the Nets would require at minimum a first-round pick plus useful players to consider parting with Claxton.

For now, the market continues to monitor Brooklyn, but league insiders remain divided on whether Porter—or Claxton—will be moved before Feb. 5.
