The Brooklyn Nets have reached agreement on a 10-day contract with guard Malachi Smith, according to league sources cited by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Smith, 26, has been playing for the Long Island Nets in the NBA G League, where he is averaging 14.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 52% from the floor and 42% from beyond the arc.
The Gonzaga product joined Brooklyn in mid-October after the club acquired his G League rights but was waived the next day. That brief stint included a $42,650 partial guarantee, which helped the Nets remain above the league’s minimum salary floor.
Undrafted in 2023, Smith has logged G League time with the Rip City Remix, Wisconsin Herd and Memphis Hustle. He signed an Exhibit 10 deal with Portland in 2023 but has yet to appear in an NBA game.
Brooklyn had an open roster spot after rookie forward Grant Nelson’s 10-day contract expired Sunday; the team opted not to bring Nelson back despite praise from head coach Jordi Fernandez.
Because Smith has no prior NBA service, he will earn $73,153 during the 10-day agreement. If the deal is finalized Saturday, he could suit up for as many as six games before the contract expires.
