The Brooklyn Nets have reached a two-year agreement with guard Malachi Smith, securing his spot for the remainder of the 2026-27 campaign, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal follows the expiration of Smith’s second 10-day contract on Friday night.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but league sources indicated next season’s salary is unlikely to be guaranteed.
Smith, 26, went undrafted out of Gonzaga in 2023 and logged time with the G League’s Rip City Remix, Wisconsin Herd and Memphis Hustle before joining the Long Island Nets earlier this season. Brooklyn called him up on a 10-day contract in March and re-upped for a second 10-day stint before committing to the multiyear pact.
The 6-foot-4 guard has appeared in 10 NBA games, averaging 7.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists across 18.2 minutes while shooting 52.7 percent from the field, 54.5 percent from three-point range and 100 percent at the free-throw line. He has connected on 29 of 55 shots overall, including 12 of 22 from deep.
“The mentality is leave it all on the floor,” Smith said Friday after scoring 15 points against Atlanta. “I don’t care if I get one minute or 10 minutes. I’m going to be able to go to sleep at night knowing I played as hard as I can.”
Brooklyn currently lists 15 players on standard contracts, but forward Tre Scott occupies a hardship 10-day slot, allowing the Nets to add Smith without a corresponding roster move.
Smith earned a $42,650 partial guarantee in training camp and collected $73,153 on each of his two 10-day contracts. If his new deal is signed Saturday at the minimum, he will receive an additional $65,838 this season, bringing his 2026-27 NBA earnings to $254,794. The figure would drop slightly if the contract is executed Sunday, though Brooklyn could choose to pay above the minimum using available cap space.
