HOUSTON — Cam Thomas will hit unrestricted free agency this summer after accepting his qualifying offer with the Brooklyn Nets in early September, and Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant says the 24-year-old scorer is worth a major investment.
“I feel like Cam has a bright future,” Durant told HoopsHype reporter Michael Scotto. “Scorers get taken for granted in this league. Hopefully somebody puts the ball in his hands, builds around him and lets him grow.”
Thomas, rested Friday against Washington, is averaging 21.4 points through 11 games.
Nets drop third straight without Porter Jr.
Brooklyn fell to 0-6 this season when leading scorer Michael Porter Jr. is sidelined. The forward missed the second night of a back-to-back because of illness, and the Wizards routed the Nets by 20. Brooklyn shot 39.5% overall and 6-for-29 from beyond the arc. Yahoo Sports’ Dan Devine examined whether the club should trade Porter ahead of the deadline to replenish assets.
Claxton absent, Sharpe steps in
Center Nic Claxton missed Friday’s game for personal reasons, opening the door for Day’Ron Sharpe’s first start of the year. Sharpe produced 14 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks in nearly 30 minutes.
“One thing we know is Day’Ron is going to play extremely hard,” head coach Jordi Fernández said, according to The New York Post’s Brian Lewis. Brooklyn holds a $6.25 million team option on Sharpe’s 2026-27 contract.
Fernández critiques Traore’s shot selection
Rookie guard Nolan Traore went 1-for-8 from the field and 1-for-5 from three Thursday in Houston, prompting Fernández to urge him to attack the paint rather than settle for outside looks. “If you keep doing the same thing and seeing the same results, that’s the definition of insanity,” the coach said.
Traore refrained from three-point attempts Friday and scored 12 points in 26 minutes.
