The front office has retained all five first-round selections acquired last season while parting ways with guard Cam Thomas, a move that clarified his role and future. General manager Sean Marks is now using the balance of the schedule to assess recent draftees Nolan Traore and Egor Demin without the pressure of immediate results.
Financially, Brooklyn holds what is considered the NBA’s cleanest cap sheet. The club could enter the offseason with as much as $50 million in spending power while still controlling a deep cache of future draft capital. That flexibility positions the Nets to pursue veteran talent, absorb contracts or trade up in what scouts expect to be a strong draft class.
A major offseason decision involves forward Michael Porter Jr., whose $40.8 million contract expires next summer. Management must determine whether to extend the 25-year-old swingman, explore a sign-and-trade or allow the deal to lapse and preserve cap space.
Brooklyn still lacks a definitive franchise centerpiece, an issue the upcoming lottery could address. Landing a top-tier prospect would complement the size and playmaking added by last year’s rookie group and accelerate the timeline for contention.
For now, the Nets are content to evaluate youth, guard their draft picks and keep their books clear—quietly assembling the leverage needed to act quickly when the right opportunity arises.
