The Brooklyn Nets have opted not to issue a second 10-day contract to rookie forward Grant Nelson after his initial agreement expired Sunday night, according to league sources.

Nelson, 23, appeared in four games during his brief stint, logging 35 total minutes. He recorded 17 points, six rebounds, five assists, five blocks and one steal while shooting 5-for-9 from the floor (55.6%) and 7-for-10 at the free-throw line (70.0%). The 6’11” forward also picked up six personal fouls and four turnovers.

His most productive outing came on March 1 in Cleveland, where he posted 11 points, four rebounds, three blocks and a steal in 20 minutes.

Head coach Jordi Fernández praised the former North Dakota State and Alabama standout prior to Saturday’s game: “He’s a very good basketball player. Everything he does, he does it well … His size is great. He’s a multi-positional defender, very good play-maker, fast. All of those things have been very good. It translates to this level.” Fernández acknowledged at the time that Nelson’s future with the club was uncertain.

Nelson spent most of his rookie season with the Nets’ G League affiliate in Long Island, which retains his NBAGL rights. With the decision not to re-sign him, he becomes an unrestricted NBA free agent while Long Island can still add him to its roster.

Brooklyn now has an open spot on its 15-man roster. One possible internal option is forward Chaney Johnson, currently on a two-way contract. Johnson has yet to appear in an NBA game but has produced strong numbers for Long Island.
