Guard Cam Thomas will remain with the Brooklyn Nets for at least one more season after signing his one-year qualifying offer worth just under $6 million earlier this month.

The move came after talks on a long-term deal stalled, but general manager Sean Marks told reporters the decision should not be viewed as an indication the 23-year-old is on his way out.

“It’s maybe the ugly part of the business when you can’t find common ground,” Marks said. “That doesn’t mean he’s not a Net in the future or throughout the season.”

Player chooses control

Thomas said the qualifying offer gives him the flexibility he wants heading into unrestricted free agency next summer. “I’d rather control my situation,” he explained. “Just going to finish the year and we’ll see what happens. But I’m happy to be here to play in front of fans again.”

He added that there were “more pros” to accepting the one-year deal than signing another contract, noting, “You want to keep the power you have as a player as much as you can, as long as you can. That was really the main deciding factor.”

Career-best production

Thomas averaged 22.5 points across 66 games last season, emerging as one of the Nets’ primary scoring options. By playing out the 2024-25 campaign on the qualifying offer, he will be eligible to test the market without restrictions in July 2025.
