NBPA Challenges Bucks’ Reported Plan to Sit Giannis for Remainder of Season

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) on Tuesday publicly backed Giannis Antetokounmpo in his dispute with the Milwaukee Bucks over whether the two-time MVP should be sidelined for the rest of the 2025/26 campaign.
Last week, multiple reports indicated Milwaukee intended to keep Antetokounmpo out for several weeks after a season marked by knee, groin, ankle and calf issues. Despite a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, the forward has reportedly lobbied to return once cleared, even though the Bucks have slipped out of playoff contention.
In a statement released through the union, the NBPA questioned the league’s commitment to its Player Participation Policy, which requires healthy stars to play. “The policy was designed to hold teams accountable and ensure that when an All-Star like Giannis Antetokounmpo is healthy and ready to play, he is on the court,” the NBPA said, adding that enforcement gaps hurt fans, broadcast partners and the game’s integrity.
The NBA considers it a violation if a team shuts down a healthy star for an extended stretch, a rule meant to deter organizations from resting top talent to improve draft positioning. Determining full health, however, can hinge on differing medical opinions, particularly with minor ailments common during an 82-game slate.
The regular season has nearly three weeks remaining, leaving open the possibility that Antetokounmpo could suit up if team doctors deem him fit and the Bucks change course. The NBPA also expressed readiness to collaborate with the league on additional anti-tanking measures, as Commissioner Adam Silver has pledged to introduce new rules before the 2026/27 season.
