The possibility of pairing two explosive backcourt scorers surfaced this week when Dallas Hoops Journal contributor James Piercey outlined a trade concept that would move Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant to the Phoenix Suns.

Proposed terms

Suns receive: Ja Morant
Grizzlies receive: Jalen Green, Nick Richards

Why Memphis might listen

According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, the Grizzlies have indicated they are comfortable keeping Morant beyond the league’s Feb. 5 trade deadline. Still, rival front offices are monitoring the situation closely.

Morant remains a dynamic playmaker but has faced questions about availability, durability and perimeter accuracy. Through 20 games, the 24-year-old is averaging 19.5 points and 8.1 assists while shooting 41 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Acquiring 22-year-old Jalen Green and 26-year-old Nick Richards would give Memphis younger pieces, potential upside and added roster flexibility in place of its current franchise cornerstone.

Why Phoenix could take the swing

Phoenix has limited draft capital and is seeking ways to maximize a roster built around Devin Booker. Adding Morant would install a downhill creator who pressures the rim and sets up teammates, allowing Booker to focus on scoring. The move would also inject additional pace and playmaking into the Suns’ offense.

The scenario is strictly a thought experiment, but it highlights how both franchises could pursue sharply different strategic paths: Memphis prioritizing long-term adaptability and Phoenix opting for immediate star power.
