NBA front offices evaluating a potential deal for Dallas Mavericks forward Anthony Davis prefer to see the eight-time All-Star slim down before engaging in serious negotiations, league sources told Ashish Mathur of the Dallas Hoops Journal.

Dallas listed Davis at 268 pounds when training camp opened—roughly 15 pounds heavier than he weighed during his final season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Executives believe dropping the extra weight would help the 31-year-old regain the mobility that defined much of his career.

Medical concerns linger

ESPN previously reported that Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont requested detailed medical information to determine whether Davis faces an elevated injury risk while recovering from a left calf strain. The veteran big man has appeared in only five games this fall and just 14 overall since arriving in the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to Los Angeles.

Despite the limited action, Davis is averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks while shooting 52 percent from the floor.

Contract and trade outlook

The Mavericks have started 3-10, president of basketball operations Nico Harrison has departed, and multiple league insiders describe Davis as the most plausible high-profile player to be moved next.

Davis is earning $54.1 million this season, will be paid $58.5 million in 2024-25, and holds a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28. He is represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports.

According to the report, Dallas is expected to work closely with Davis’s representatives while exploring in-season trade scenarios.
