SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rival clubs are studying the trade market for Sacramento Kings guard Zach LaVine, but only if the two-time All-Star is willing to forgo his $48.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season, league sources told veteran reporter Marc Stein.
According to Stein, teams believe LaVine would draw “trade interest” if he agrees to a longer contract at a lower annual salary. The 30-year-old is earning $47.5 million this season while averaging 20.7 points on 49 percent shooting for a Kings squad that has opened 5-16.
Front-office frustration over LaVine’s defense and overall engagement is accelerating efforts to move him, sources informed DallasHoopsJournal. General manager Scott Perry, who opposed last year’s blockbuster deal that sent De’Aaron Fox to Chicago for LaVine, is reportedly pushing hardest for a trade. Head coach Doug Christie has also expressed dissatisfaction, the report added.
LaVine has appeared in the postseason only once during his career and carries one of the league’s heftier contracts. Sacramento’s recent moves have signaled a possible pivot toward rebuilding, with veterans quietly made available ahead of the February trade deadline.
Among potential suitors, the Milwaukee Bucks have already completed preliminary background work on LaVine, per HoopsHype insider Michael Scotto.
The key variable remains whether LaVine will relinquish nearly $49 million in guaranteed money to facilitate a fresh start elsewhere.
