Lakers reportedly weighing short-term deal as superstar options wane

The Los Angeles Lakers are signaling increased willingness to pursue a short-term roster move after learning that some of their preferred superstar targets may be out of reach, according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic on his YouTube channel.
Buha said the front office has “left the door cracked open” for a future bid for Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo but is recalibrating its timeline because the two-time MVP’s most favored landing spot is reportedly the New York Knicks, not Los Angeles. He added that recent intelligence suggests several other marquee players once viewed as attainable may now be less available than the Lakers initially believed.
While the organization continues to preserve salary-cap flexibility in case Antetokounmpo—or another elite name—becomes attainable, team executives are now more open to a win-now transaction that could strengthen the current roster, Buha noted. The Lakers had been among the clubs stockpiling assets for a potential Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, but shifting dynamics in Milwaukee and New York appear to be narrowing that market.
Buha also pointed to Luka Dončić’s standout performance at EuroBasket as a possible factor nudging Los Angeles toward a shorter timeline, though he emphasized that internal assessments of superstar availability remain the primary driver.
The reported shift suggests Los Angeles could prioritize immediate help rather than holding assets for a long-term play if the anticipated star market fails to materialize.
